It was only at the end of the 19th century that the original Torgglhof was transformed into a charming little castle. The owners, at that time, realised their dream of having their own castle and had it rebuilt. Then in 1911, the so-called Schlössl became the property of the Theiner Family. Grandpa Franz loved not only his new home, but also everything to do with wine. He underwent training in viticulture and went on to run a successful wine business. Setting his sights on the future, Franz was able to implement the large-scale production and marketing of his wines. In the early 1970s, his son Karl discovered the appealing symbiosis between viticulture and holiday retreats. Henceforth, holidaying guests were welcomed with sumptuous breakfasts in a homely atmosphere to this stately castle. Today, Andreas and Irene Theiner are the third generation of loving hosts in this charming boutique hotel near Merano.

The former dressmaker swapped her needle and thread in favour of the bakehouse. Andreas also turned his back on the banking business and is now a passionate vintner.

It is primarily the strong character Sauvignons and Pinot Blancs, but also Vernatsch, Lagrein and Merlot, which are bottled in Plars Castle’s own winery. Staying at Boutique Bed & Breakfast Hotel Schloss Plars is much more than a holiday; it's a way of life. The atmosphere is informal, relaxed and welcoming. With 16 rooms and suites, guests feel like members of the castle family but with no defined schedule or dress code. There is plenty of time and room, and plenty of personal space. You can also enjoy pure relaxation surrounded by vineyards in the fabulous infinity pool.

The new wine refugium is a place for genuine wine aficionados. The modern, newly interpreted barn building offers a space where guests enamoured of wine can experience the journey from vine to grape to wine.

The signature breakfast buffet is the culinary highlight of the castle. It includes a variety of freshly baked cakes, fragrant breads, ten different jams, regional and healthy products from South Tyrol and eggs from the farmer next door; no wish remains unfulfilled. The afternoons are sweetened with homemade cakes and coffee specialities in the castle garden. Then, in the evenings, guests are free to relax and have the opportunity to get to know South Tyrol's multifaceted dining scene.

However, a fine glass of wine is always available at this mini castle, for wine is the hosts' main passion - three family members are certified sommeliers. Andreas passionately talks about winemaking on his guided wine tours, from the vine to the glass and guests value these authentic wine discussions along with the relaxed setting in which they may sip superb wines. The historic wine cellar affords interesting insight into an earlier style of cellar management.
