A prince’s castle that forms part of the Vinum Hotels South Tyrol
Castle-like atmosphere with historical wine cellars

Behind these castle walls you’ll find a very special and elegant little boutique hotel with historical wine cellars, a gorgeous terrace and a sophisticated lounge. With eight rooms and four suites, SCHLOSS PLARS is less a hotel than a romantic refuge, a place of repose and most importantly a place with a strong sense of harmony. Here all sizes fit together, and likewise all styles; nothing is overdone or intended solely to create an effect.

Andreas Theiner, the owner of the castle and also the winemaker, offers custom-tailored wine seminars as well as wine hikes with tastings. Irene Theiner, meanwhile, delights guests at the hotel’s lavish breakfasts, where her many culinary creations and homemade treats are served.

Wine hike with tasting
Every Tuesday, there is guided hike (open to the public), followed by a tour of SCHLOSS PLARS Winery, led by Andreas Theiner and hiking guide Norbert Rechenmacher; fee: €9 per person.

Special wine seminar
In addition to the classic wine tastings, special seminars may be booked upon request. During these unique workshops with Andreas Theiner, hotel guests gain in-depth insight into vineyard work, various enological techniques, South Tyrol’s areas of cultivation, grape varieties and wines, tasting techniques and pairing of wine with food. Fee quoted upon request, since the seminar is always customized (content and dates).

Wine Spirit
Wine has always given stimulus to inspiring ideas and courageous steps. Every Thursday Andreas Theiner leads a 2-3 hour seminar about the young guns of South Tyrol’s wine scene. He’ll tell you the most incredible success stories, accompanied by a philosophical glass of wine: a truly authentic experience of wine; cost contribution: €20 per person.

The perfect breakfast for your friends at home
In this workshop you’ll learn interesting facts and practical tips for a successful themed breakfast from Irene Theiner – passion as inspiration. She’ll give you a bit of nutritional science, proven recipes and will also show you have to make some very special table decorations; weekly on Thursday afternoons (around 2 to 3 hours); cost contribution: €20 per person.

The Theiner winegrowing family’s enchanting castle hotel

The SCHLOSS PLARS Vinum Hotel is situated at an altitude of 450 meters, in the hamlet of Mitterplars, overlooking Lagundo/Algund and surrounded by vineyards. It’s an idyllic little spot with glorious vistas of the Merano Valley Basin.

For three generations now, the Theiner family of winemakers has been successfully running a holiday residence for discerning guests at the romantic little castle, which is adorned with tower and battlements. All of Andreas and Irene Theiner’s twelve rooms and suites are extremely spacious, and tastefully furnished with fine period furniture. The warm, breezy microclimate in Algund-Mitterplars is very convenient, not only for guests, but also for ripening of the grapes in the Theiner's vineyard. Their oldest vines date back to 1911, when Andrea’s grandfather Franz planted them.

After starting out as a banker, Andreas returned to his true roots and made a career change, becoming a dedicated winemaker. Delicately fruity wines with strong character thrive at the Raut, Torggl and Broat sites: Sauvignon, Pinot Blanc, Schiava, Lagrein and Merlot. Every week, there is a guided hike with wine-cellar tour at the SCHLOSS PLARS Winery. Andreas Theiner also offers individual wine tastings for groups of up to 25 people. Special seminars can also be organized upon request for wine enthusiasts who want to immerse themselves into South Tyrol’s wine history and gain in-depth knowledge about various winemaking techniques.

Merano and environs

Vernatsch enjoyed a great deal of appreciation as the “grape cure” in Merano during the century before the First World War. Since time immemorial, Vernatsch has been known here as Meraner Hügel – a lighter and very spicy type of Vernatsch. In 1852 Archduke Johann introduced the first Pinot noir and Pinot blanc: a pioneering achievement with positive consequences.
