Valley of the wind
With harsh wind, untold hours of sunshine and low rainfall, grapevines in Vinschgau form deep roots. This makes the whites very mineral, and gives Zweigelt and Pinot noir a delicately fruity and racy character.

Fresh white wines, slender Pinto noir
The terraces on steep slopes, supported by dry stone walls, are reminiscent of the West German Rheingau areas – as are the microclimate and the shale soils. It's no wonder that a few top-class Rieslings thrive here. Fresh Alpine acidity sets apart the mostly dry or semi-dry Gewürztraminer and Pinot blanc. Pinot noir has an elegant slenderness here; the austere yet pleasant tannins of the small quantity of Zweigelt grown here is a lovely surprise.
