Weingut & Genusshotel Spitalerhof***S

The "old" Spitalerhof, which was constructed around 1833, was formerly owned by the nearby Säben Monastery. This farm in Klausen was purchased by the forebears of the current host family, Oberpertinger in the 1950s and transformed into a guesthouse. The new Spitalerhof has been around since 2021: in touch with nature, relaxed, informal and with that special Spitalerhof feeling, in which the old and the new blend together and the traditional flirts with the wacky.

The unique wooden barrel suites with their own garden and whirlpool are a romantic and wine-crazy special feature. Each suite is shaped like a huge wooden barrel, the perfect ambience for wine-loving couples.

The view from the suites falls directly onto Sepplsee, a natural swimming pond built by Grandpa Sepp in 1968; a grandiose achievement back in the day because outdoor swimming pools were almost non-existent at the time. Today, Sepplsee is a wonderful untreated swimming pool with a natural water treatment system. Here, neither chlorine nor chemical additives are added to the naturally clear bathing water. It’s the way Grandpa Sepp likes it!

There is also a remarkable story to tell about Grandma Moidl. In addition to winegrowing, the Oberpertingers have always - and still today - been passionately devoted to distilling grappa. In 1954, grandma was accused of moonshining and a hefty fine was imposed. Framed and on display as an admonishing reminder, this fine can be admired in the in-house distillery.

Today, the vineyards located at an altitude of 900 m are mainly cultivated with white wines. Sylvaner, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon blanc and Green Veltliner thrive magnificently on these high slopes.

The last grape variety is junior boss, Michael's absolute favourite wine, which he prefers to enjoy in his favourite spot: "A little bench under the oak tree in the middle of the vineyard." But in this extraordinary tasting room, the host feels very at home with his passion for wine. Wine tastings are regularly held here with guests too. The walls are made of sandy loamy silt like the soils of the surrounding wine area. And, if after enjoying the delicious wine you feel like sampling a little nightcap, reach for the homemade grappa, Williams or the legendary apple gin called "Waschtl".

At Spitalerhof, you also experience a genuinely great feeling regarding the culinary side of things. The cooking is predominantly based on seasonal produce, most of which comes from the farm's own vineyards, orchards, gardens and fields. The short distances directly from garden to plate make all the difference. The eggs come from the Goggo Lodge, the farm's chicken coop and thus arrive on the guests' breakfast tables fresher than fresh.
