The world-famous snow-white marble from Lasa is considered one of the most expensive of its kind. By the late 19th century, this robust Val Venosta marble had already caused a sensation at the Vienna World Exhibition. Today, this white gold adorns two of the most prominent financial and cultural centres in the world - the Victoria Memorial in London and the subway station at Ground Zero, New York.
The busy factory site of Lasa Marmo Ltd. is located on the southern edge of the marble village of Lasa in the Venosta Valley. The factory is the last link in the extraction chain of this premium white stone from the spectacular marble quarries of the Lasa Valley. This so-called white-water quarry consists of a branching network of labyrinthine, winding passages and quarrying halls that extend several kilometres into the interior of the Lasa marble mountain. The unique marble train has connected the white-water quarry with the factory for almost 95 years, thus providing this precious stone an eco-friendly form of transport to the valley.
