Neustift Abbey was founded in the 12th century and its monastery complex is undoubtedly one of the most significant architectural ensembles in South Tyrol. The countless Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Rococo and Classicist structures bear witness to Neustift's varied and long history. The complex houses important examples of Romanesque central-plan building such as the two-storey gate chapel and the massive bell tower. The interior of the church only reveals itself to be a jewel of southern German Rococo once you enter. Next to the church is the cloister with its pointed-arched apertures and Gothic frescoes. Another particularity of the monasterial complex is the Abbey Library, decorated with elegant stucco, represents one of the most beautiful secular rooms of the 18th century in South Tyrol at the transition from Rococo to Classicism. Master builder - Giuseppe Sartori from Sacco created the light-filled library hall in 1778, with ornate locks on the large portals and a patterned marble floor thus bestowing the library a festive character.
