Schnalstal - wine-growing region Val Venosta

A 300-year-old farmhouse in typical Schnals architectural style, traditional South Tyrolean cuisine at the highest level and a welcoming host family – these are the secret ingredients of the Raffeiner family's recipe for success in Schnals Valley.
Oberraindlhof was mentioned for the first time in a document dated 1581. Anton Raffeiner, great-grandfather and master shoemaker acquired the farm located between Karthaus and Unser Frau in 1880 and began renting out rooms as a sideline in the early 1900s. Even then, "summer holidaymakers" were enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings, the fresh air and the heartfelt hospitality. The Schnals log-cabin style, built using local larch, lends this group of farms a very special flair - unique both then and now. Oberraindlhof has been renovated time and time again, transforming it into a very special retreat. There are 29 rooms clad in local stone pine wood to promote health and relaxation and, four old wood-panelled farmhouse parlours to welcome guests with homely cosiness. One of these is over 200 years old and comes from Raffeinerhof, the host family's ancestral farm.
The restaurant at Oberraindlhof has been honoured with the Gault Millau award for many years, and last year it also received the coveted Bib Gourmand award from the Michelin Guide. The kitchen impresses with authentic regional dishes such as Schnals pasta with mutton ragout or Schnals snow milk, which, depending on the farm, usually contains a secret ingredient.

The Art of Wine at Oberraindlhof
Benjamin and Andrea have been running the family business together with his parents in the fifth generation since 2020.
It all began with farmhouse holidays. In the 1980s, Elisabeth and Helmuth took over the business from their parents and turned it into a bed and breakfast. In the early 1990s, the small snack station became a popular restaurant and later a hotel.
Oberraindlhof is a Vinum hotel through and through thanks to their absolute passion for wine. Helmuth, teetotal from birth, discovered this passion after a wine trip. His mother, Elisabeth, then gifted him a sommelier course, and the whole family has been in a wine frenzy ever since. In 2004, he became the first sommelier in Schnals and organised wine weeks and excursions, including one to "Juvaler Hill", where the grapes are grown.
The hotel's wine cellar boasts an impressive collection of wines from South Tyrol, including autochthonous grape varieties such as Vernatsch and Lagrein, as well as Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. Guests will find 450 different labels to choose from, including special Vinschgau wines.
And which place in the hotel is your favourite?
Clearly, the parlours! They are particularly fond of the hunting lounge. This is where seated together they hold private tastings. The low-ceilinged rooms are so snug and cosy, perfect for spending a lovely time, whatever the weather. The parlours are the heart of Oberraindlhof, a place of comfort and conviviality, perfectly reflecting the hotel’s charm and traditionality.

Perfect holidays - Totally mad about wine!
The Spitalerhof is a winery. Where the emphasis is on top quality.
Not by coincidence, but by tradition and conviction. We are dedicated to excellence. Wine from our ancient grape varieties. Schnapps distilled right here using our own ingredients. And, of course, the traditional dishes that always reflect a little of the wider world too. Luxury that takes the most direct route it can: from the field to the pan, from the garden to the plate, from the vine to the glass. All this makes the Spitalerhof a favourite haunt of wine lovers and dinner table philosophers. For like-minded people.
However, the Spitalerhof is also a hotel with all the frills. Situated where the world of the Dolomites rubs shoulders with vineyards, where the down-to-earth meets the sophisticated. And just a few rows of vines away from the little artists’ town of Klausen. The place to be for connoisseurs, hobby winemakers, bikers and mountain lovers. For those looking for something special. Holiday memories with a similar long-lasting aftertaste to our fine wines.
2021 - a special year for the Spitalerhof! After the renovation works, our winery and luxury hotel are once more revealing their old winemaking soul: full-bodied, characterful and multifaceted. Or, to use the words of a winemaker: a successful blend of old and new. Of tradition and vision. With an earthy note reminiscent of South Tyrolean pragmatism and fine aromas of the wider world. A little bit of luxury. Yesterday and today, rustic details and modern design.
If it were up to us, a holiday would be a holistic experience - preferably a mixture of indulgence, taking part, camaraderie and nature.

Nicely matured - People with character
Anyone who knows us knows that we are always up for the good things in life. That we are doers and makers. The type that are happy to get their hands dirty and never count the hours in the day. Anyone who knows us also knows that we are keen for new ideas. No matter how crazy they might at first seem. Perhaps they are also what make the Spitalerhof special. Especially close to nature. Especially close to what defines us as hosts and people.
Good roots - Our values
We think that a holiday should be as multifaceted and full-bodied as a fine wine. An experience that nourishes one long afterwards. With memories and stories that are enjoyable to tell at home time and time again. So long and so often that really everyone knows them. That’s why we invite our guests to take part. To get involved. To feel for themselves what sets us apart: the trust in our own and a love of what surrounds us. The nature of South Tyrol. Our vine terraces, fields and orchards. Knowledge that has ripened with time and experience. Ancient traditions that are carried on in our everyday activities. Much of what we do is still genuine manual work and craftsmanship.
Eating and drinking well - A great gut feeling
What is it that makes the Spitalerhof a luxury hotel? A gut decision. For goodness, for quality, for our own. Perhaps though, too, it is the passion that can be tasted in everything that fills our plates, bowls and glasses. And the craftsmanship, the time. Many of the seasonal products that we use in our kitchen, in the wine cellar, in the distillery or the ice cream factory come from our own terraces, orchards, gardens and fields. The wine, the fruit, the brandies - and even the eggs. Everything delivered from within a stone’s throw. And when we don’t have a product growing here, then our friends help us.
Claudia’s ice cream factory - Hot for ice cream
Ice cold, creamy, sweet and... what else? When ice cream tastes of rosemary, Swiss stone pine, elderflower or South Tyrolean chestnut and makes your taste buds do a little dance, then it probably comes straight from Claudia’s ice cream factory. Whilst Muga - otherwise known as Michael - expresses his culinary creativity with the pots and pans in the kitchen, Claudia dedicates herself to her ice-cold creations - depending on the season, the ice cream sundaes have resonant names such as “strawberry meets elderflower”. Every spoonful is an experience in its own right!

Wine-tasting hotel with winery in Appiano
The Stroblhof Hotel and Winery has stunned the Schloss Eppan Castle area with its elegant, restrained architecte. There is nothing obtrusive here: the natural bathing pond is nestled into the hill, lined with chestnuts; the sauna, swimming and spa complex is also hidden within the hills, as is the winery, which is equipped with all the modern technology. Perhaps it was the cool fall winds that blow towards Stroblhof, at the foot of Gantkofelsturze, which shielded the head of the Hanni-Nicolussi family from an “overblown” conversion.
Here, subtle design and renovation in keeping with the historically grown wine landscape are consistently practiced. The elegant, always well-dressed owner, Andreas Nicolussi-Leak is a personality in the Independent Winegrowers of South Tyrol. The farsighted winemaker has fully recognized the potential of the Stroblhof wine estates, especially with his Burgundian varieties. The Strahler Pinot blanc and the Pinot noir riserva are absolute premium wines that would hold their own in an international comparison of top wines.
The Hotel Stroblhof, geared towards wine and gastronomy, has been run by the family since 1900. Its enchanting location in the heart of Eppan’s best-known wineries allows guests to enjoy a wholly relaxing day in the countryside. The gourmet cuisine has been inspired by regional and Mediterranean lightness.

A wine-tasting hotel with new suites and bold colors
This small, welcoming design hotel has focused on hospitality since 1952. In collaboration with architect Stephan Marx, forty new suites were built as well as a casual, colorful bar and clay enoteca with an impressive 402 labels.
Here tradition and modernity have been boldly fused. The coffee served on the terrace at breakfast is roasted in-house and filtered by hand. The cozy restaurant, with a large glass front, serves food in a casual atmosphere. The spa area, which has a 21-meter indoor/outdoor pool, will please even the most discriminating guests.

Refreshingly casual and unaffectedly designed
The family tradition goes back to 1952, when Johann Ganthaler built the Muchele Vinum Hotel; his grandchildren are now keeping that tradition alive in the third generation. The Muchele was radically restructured in 2015, together with South Tyrolean architect Stephan Marx, with boldly modern design and a strong feeling for the Heimat, the homeland. The Muchele is a very special hotel. The family runs it with a lot of heart, and it’s ideally situated just five kilometers outside of spa resort of Merano. It is a charming place with only 40 rooms and suites, all recently redesigned.
The painstaking design features locally sourced materials such as porphyry and chestnut wood, as well as ornate, symbolic iron latticework. This little place is ideal for anyone who loves visiting South Tyrol. The hotel bar is a large living space in the open air. Wine is a among the hotelier family’s greatest passions. As a result, the boss’s “office” is the new brick-earth enoteca, which proudly carries 402 labels. Whether in the rustic, 150-year-old Stube parlor from Val Venosta/Vinschgau, relaxing on the cool Moroso garden furniture or dining at the completely glassed-in restaurant, wine takes center stage at the Muchele – and the celebrating of it enhances the casual, buoyant atmosphere.
The Ganthaler family and its loyal employees take enough time to advise every guest personally. The head of the family, Hansjörg, loves leading wine tastings: they are always very rewarding and usually end up being quite entertaining. Guests at the Muchele constantly come into contact with the world of wine. Activities offered include wine walks from the hotel with the host family or a visit to the vineyards of the neighboring winery, Moarhof; another option for wine enthusiasts is a visit to the innovative Ansitz Eichenstein Winery (Marlengo/Marling), including tour and tasting. At the hotel’s casual, colorfully decorated bar there are always at least ten white and red wines open. In addition to wine and genuine South Tyrolean cuisine made with quality products, the Ganthaler family loves coffee. In fact, a family member has operated South Tyrol’s smallest coffee roastery in Vinschgau for the last three years, with a lot of passion and commitment. Quality beans are manually refined here, using traditional drum roasting.
One of the wine highlights is the Architecture Wine Days (Architektur-Weintage), which take place twice a year. Another major event is the International WineFestival, which brings countless wine producers selected from all over the world to Merano every year, on the second weekend in November.
