Juval Castle towers high above the entrance to Schnals Valley in the municipality of Kastelbell-Tschars and since its construction in 1278, many different noble families have resided here. The old walls have lived through a remarkable history thus acquiring their unique character. Greatly influenced by Hans von Sinkmoser, who in the 16th century had this one-time fortified castle converted into a grand Renaissance home. The towers, Renaissance frescoes and the Gothic corridor with historical scenes of the castle are architectural highlights.
Juval Castle has been owned by extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner for 40 years and serves as his home as well as the location of the world-famous Messner Mountain Museum "MMM Juval - Mountain Myth”. The castle complex underwent meticulous renovations integrating the medieval walls with modern and foreign architecture elements. Thereby keeping the historic walls intact and protected and leaving the view of the building's history open through the transparent glass-steel construction.
