The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano extend over 12 hectares of landscape with an altitude differential of 100 metres. This opens spectacular views of the more than eighty garden landscapes and offers a botanical journey through four garden realms with plants from around the globe. The heart of this natural amphitheatre is the romantic water lily pond, inhabited by Japanese koi, ducks and turtles.
The gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle opened their doors in 2001 after a seven-year period of construction. To date, they have received three awards: in 2005 - "Italy's Most Beautiful Garden", in 2013 - "International Garden of the Year" and in 2021 the European Award for Ecological Gardening. Over the years, new attractions have been added, the most popular being the "Matteo Thun'sche Gucker" viewing platform, an idea by South Tyrolean architect and designer Matteo Thun. The complex's castle houses the South Tyrolean Museum of Tourism. 250 years of tourism history in vividly designed rooms recounted in the wink of an eye.
