Wine gourmet with its own mountain winery

The modern-day Romantik Hotel Oberwirt was first documented in 1496, as a Marling tavern. In 1748 the Waldner family took over the former inn, together with its associated agriculture (livestock breeding, farming, fruit-growing and viticulture); for 11 generations now, the Waldner family has been growing and making wine. With the purchase and construction of the Eichenstein Winery on Mount Freiberg above Meran, a new milestone has been set and the family winemaking expanded. The Waldner wines are now being developed and stored in the newly built wine cellar at Eichenstein. The winery's enoteca, Vinarium, offers tastings of fine wines such as Pinot blanc, Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Merlot/Cabernet.

Sepp Waldner expanded the tradition-steeped inn with meticulous attention to every detail, and has now created a unique 4-star-superior Romantik Hotel, which not only offers every comfort but has also retained its originality. The hotelier, who is extremely enthusiastic about wine, has maintained the quaint atmosphere of the hotel, reconciling it with modern creature comforts.

The cuisine of the Oberwirt ranks among the most renowned in South Tyrol. Our experienced kitchen team creates culinary highlights of the new South Tyrolean cuisine that delight every gourmet. A carefully curated selection of fine wines from South Tyrol and other regions of Italy completes the award-winning wine list. Anyone who would like to explore the idyllic vineyard sites of Merano's Freiberg first-hand can experience the luxury of living in the vineyard: Romantics will love the vineyard chalet at Eichenstein, which leaves nothing to be desired, including complete tranquility, sunshine, fresh air and breathtaking views of the Meran Valley Basin and surrounding mountains.

Merano and environs

Vernatsch enjoyed a great deal of appreciation as the “grape cure” in Merano during the century before the First World War. Since time immemorial, Vernatsch has been known here as Meraner Hügel – a lighter and very spicy type of Vernatsch. In 1852 Archduke Johann introduced the first Pinot noir and Pinot blanc: a pioneering achievement with positive consequences.
