The Eisack Valley Chestnut Trail – colloquially known as Keschtnweg – stretches for a total of 63 km from Neustift Abbey near Brixen to Runkelstein Castle in the Bolzano basin.

This picturesque trail can be hiked in several stages winding through vibrant woodland, lush green meadows and, above all, majestic chestnut groves. In autumn, hikers can expect a truly special nature experience. But even throughout the rest of the year, the diverse vegetation offers incomparable scenic charm. A particularly beautiful hike leads over Pfeffersberg, past Säben Cloister, and up to the Ritten plateau, complete with stunning panoramic views of the Dolomites. Along the chestnut trail, you will have plenty of opportunities to purchase regional products directly from farmers. Those interested in history will also get their money's worth on this hike. Art and natural monuments along the trail tell stories of ancient cultures and legendary places filled with witches, fairies, and spirits.

THE KNOWLEDGE: The chestnut has also been known as the ‘bread tree’ for centuries. As early as ancient Greece, chestnut flour was an important source of nourishment alongside grain.
