A blaze of colours in hues of gold and yellow

The largest alpine lake district in the Eastern Alps consists of a group of ten mountain lakes and is considered one of the most beautiful in the Alps. The very names of some of the lakes – Grünsee (Lake Green), Schwarzsee (Lake Black), Schiefersee (Lake Slate), Milchsee (Lake Milk) – give an idea of the size and colourfulness of these waters. Located in the heart of the Texel Group and rising between 2,117 and 2,589 metres above sea level, with a minimum walking time of six hours, this endurance tour is ideal for the experienced hiker. The trail takes you up steep grassy slopes and on to exposed rocky terrain with fixed chains to assist, so a good head for heights is prerequisite. At Oberkaser Alm experience pure mountain idyll. Here you can enjoy good food, some of which is home-made, such as the alpine butter, home-smoked bacon and lamb from the farm. Sitting at the hut provides shelter whilst surrounded by lakes and alpine flowers. Climbing chamois and whistling marmots are not an uncommon sight.
