Top of South Tyrol Wine

Gala tasting of all South Tyrol’s top award-winning wines from the last year
While, 20 years ago, the wines of South Tyrol were considered rough rather than fruity, lightweight rather than full-bodied, and short and simple rather than breathtakingly complex and long-lasting, the reputation of Italy’s northernmost winemaking region has since undergone radical change. Modern South Tyrolean wines are generally esteemed as world wines with an uncomplicated elegance and a seductive range of aromas. These wines above all promise what wine-lovers in general appreciate most: immediate pleasure! Red wines with plenty of fruit and tannins are increasingly asserting themselves against the old-style wines, while white wines of a crisp freshness and juicy minerality bear witness to the independence and renewed self-confidence of local winemakers.
The cream of this year’s grape harvest in South Tyrol will be presented at an exclusive tasting of award-winning wines, to be held on 1 December at the Brixen Forum! Internationally recognised wine guides regularly test South Tyrolean red, white and sparkling wines for quality and honour the best of them with coveted awards. This is the sixth consecutive occasion that wine-lovers can savour the “Top of South Tyrol Wine”, featuring wines awarded top marks by such prestigious Italian wine guides as the Gambero Rosso, Espresso, Veronelli, Bibenda, Vinibuoni, Slow Wine, Vitae, and the Guida Essenziale by Doctor Wine.

Visitors will have the opportunity to taste and to discuss the exquisite sparkling, red and white wines on offer from 2 to 9 pm.
Good Burgundies do not just come from Burgundy – South Tyrol’s best Pinot Nero (Blauburgunder) wines, such as the Riserva Trattmann Mazzon 2013 from the Girlan Winery (top-rated by Gambero Rosso, Bibenda, Doctor Wine and AIS) or the Blauburgunder Riserva Zeno 2013 from the Meraner Burggräfler Winery (singled out for praise by Doctor Wine) are easily able to hold their own in international tasting competitions.

Good wines are the product of dedicated work on the part of South Tyrolean winegrowers and wineries. An intensive search for the best Gewürztraminer saw the Tramin Winery receiving awards from every wine guide: the Gewürztraminer Nussbaumer 2014 from the Söll vineyard above Tramin, a “premier cru” location, is the king of aromatic white wines. With the Terlaner I Grande Cuvée 2013, Terlaner Weissburgunder Rarität 2004 and Terlaner Riserva Nova Domus 2013, the Terlan Winery now has no fewer than three wines present in the Italian wine firmament. The vines from the best locations around Terlan store the heat of the day and are then cooled at night by the fresh breezes of the Etsch Valley, lending the white grapes their tangy aroma, fine acidity and mineral character, while giving finesse and elegance to the reds.

The old bishopric of Brixen is surrounded by well-known estates such as that of the Neustift Monastery, the Hoandlhof, Kuenhof, Pacherhof, Köfererhof and the Taschlerhof. While one hundred years ago it was still the chestnuts, unspoilt nature and impromptu taverns that made the Eisack Valley famous, its hallmark today is indisputably wine! The Sylvaner and Grüne Veltliner are especially typical of the area: their considerable potential for aging has impressed the leading Italian wine critics. The Vinum Hotels Südtirol, the major partners of the local wine business, wish to congratulate all the region’s dedicated winegrowers and winemakers on their great and well-deserved success in Italy’s leading wine guides!
